Elgin's Historical Society has a wealth of information for history buffs and anyone who wishes to remember “when”! Started in 1984, our large archive includes photographs, school information, historical records, furniture, Elgin’s business and family memorabilia and detailed Genealogy and Obituary records.
See class photos, yearbooks, desks, books, band and athletic uniforms and early school documents from the Elgin Public and rural schools. In 1993, the Elgin Public School bell was located in the city park adjacent to the Museum.
Early items used in cooking, canning, and laundry, give a glimpse of home-life, along with furniture made in Elgin, toys and dolls.
The Thoma Store counter provides the center piece for Center Street business displays. Lutra businesses occupy another wall.
Furniture and equipment from the offices of Dr. H. H. Wolf, physician, and Dr. Ray Crider, veterinarian, are found in our medical section, along with items from other early medical professionals and druggists, along with Red Cross items.
On display are archived items from WWI to recent conflicts and the Gerald L. Boleyn collection.
Tatted and crocheted lace adorned many a garment in early days. A collection of such patterns is on display. Hooks and needles were busy making items for the wardrobe and home, including rugs and quilts. View an early “Minnesota A” treadle sewing machine sold by Sears.
From Native Americans to our Swiss and Norwegian ancestry, we celebrate our heritage here in the “Little Switzerland of Northeast Iowa.”
From the 1850’s, our churches have built a strong faith community.
Clubs and organizations have been active throughout Elgin’s history, providing service and enrichment to daily life.
Farm and trade tools, and implements are displayed in the “School House” addition.
