Turkey River Archaeo-Blitz

Office of the State Archaeologist and the Iowa Archeological Society's recap of the event:

"Thank you to all who attended, participated, prepared, and helped organize Saturday's Turkey River Archaeo-Blitz and Celebration of Native American Culture! The day was a huge success!

We:

• welcomed an estimated 300 attendees
• ran out of the DELICIOUS lunch food after feeding ~ 200 people beef and hominy soup, squash and corn, fresh berries, and fry bread (Thank you Kristina Young Bear!)
• saw and learned about some beautiful artwork by Meskwaki and Ho-Chunk artists (Thank you Bill, Randall, Nina, Hilda, and Daniel!)
• watched an AMAZING performance by Larry Yazzie and Romeo Buffalo thanks to Native Pride Dancers. (see the livestream at: https://livestream.com/meskwakination/trcelebration)
• helped raise donations for the future Tribes of the Turkey River interpretive project in Elgin, IA
• recorded 21 new archaeological sites across Iowa, for a total of 36 new sites during our two Elgin events, which is helping us to build our archaeological knowledge about the Turkey River area
• sent dozens of people home with new records of their finds after we scanned participant sheets and photographed artifacts associated with new sites



We have a huge appreciation for our project partners, Elgin Iowa Historical Society & Museum, Meskwaki Tribal Museum, Meskwaki Nation - The Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa Media Services, and University of Iowa Department of Anthropology, as well as the UI Office of the Vice President for Research who funded this project through their Community Engaged Scholars Program."
